Independent Study Information
Parents and guardians of CJUSD students have the option to enroll their child(ren) in in-person instruction or independent study for the 2021-2022 school year.
The independent study program is administered completely online. Students will complete their independent work using a standards-based online program called, Edgenuity. If you are interested in learning more about the independent study program, parents and guardians will need to request a pupil-parent-educator conference to ask questions before making the decision about enrollment with your current home school site administrator.
Procedures for Enrolling in Independent Study or Re-enrolling in In-person Classes
To enroll in independent study for the 2021-2022 school year, there must be a signed master agreement for each student. The student and their parent/legal guardian/caregiver will have the opportunity to review and ask questions about the master agreement with your home school site administrator before signing.
For students with exceptional needs, the student’s individualized education program (IEP) must specifically provide for independent study before the pupil can begin participating.
While in independent study, if at any time you wish to have your child return to in-person classes, you may notify your home school site administrator and arrangements will be made to have your child return to in-person instruction within five instructional days.
Instructional Time During Independent Study
For Kindergarten through 3rd grade, there will be daily scheduled 20-minute synchronous instruction held on Google Meets. Synchronous instruction means classroom-style, small group, or one-on-one instruction delivered by the Independent Study teacher. The length of time will be significantly shorter than what students had during distance learning last year. Most of the day will consist of students doing work independently with help from the parent/guardian.
For grades 4 through 8, there will be scheduled 20 minute Google Meets for both daily live interaction, and at least weekly synchronous instruction. Live interaction means interaction between the student and teacher and it may include other peers. Synchronous instruction means classroom-style, small group, or one-on-one instruction. The length of time that students will meet with their Independent Study teacher will be significantly shorter than what students had during distance learning last year. Most of the day will consist of students doing work independently with help from the parent/guardian.
For grades 9 through 12, there will be a weekly scheduled 20 minutes Google Meet for students to attend synchronous instruction. Synchronous instruction means classroom-style, small group, or one-on-one instruction. Most of a student’s day will consist of working independently with help from the parent/guardian.
