Attendance & Engagement

Challenge Rules
-
Each school’s attendance percentage from the month of February will serve as a baseline for the challenge.
-
When a school exceeds its attendance baseline, it earns points based on the improvement. For example, if the baseline attendance is 93.0% and the actual attendance for the day is 94.1%, the school’s attendance has increased by 1.1 percentage points. The school will earn 11 March Madness Points for that day, since March Madness Points are calculated by multiplying the percentage increase by 10.
-
Points earned on Mondays & Fridays in March are worth double the value.
-
The leaderboard will be updated daily.
-
The school with the most points at the end of the day March 31 wins the challenge and a special surprise from the Attendance Prize Squad.

School attendance is essential to every student’s success, and absences can easily lead to academic trouble and create gaps in relationships with friends.
CJUSD encourages all families to minimize absences unless a child is ill. Families should get their children to school on time and align vacations and appointments with the school calendar to avoid unnecessary absences. Each day missed at school is a missed day of instruction, a day of classroom interaction with students and teachers that cannot be recovered.
Please avoid discretionary travel during school and plan vacations and trips during calendar breaks. There is no substitute for in-person instruction.
For your planning purposes, here is a list of the remaining breaks and important dates through May 29, 2025:
- Winter Break: December 23, 2024-January 3, 2025
- Lincoln’s Birthday - no school: February 10, 2025
- Washington’s Birthday - no school: February 17, 2024
- Spring Break: April 14-17, 2025
- Last Day of School: May 29, 2025
Showing up matters for R.E.A.L. It is an opportunity to:
Build Routines: To help make getting to school every day a little easier, establish a routine of daily attendance using habits such as preparing clothes the night before or setting a regular bedtime.
Increase Engagement: Being in school helps students get to know each other and school staff and builds relationships that motivate participation in learning. Relationships matter!
Provide Access to Resources: CJUSD schools provide access to valuable resources such as meals, mental health & wellness supports and fun enrichment activities such as sports, clubs, music, and other afterschool programs. Need support, please reach out!
Support Learning: Regular attendance is often an indicator of higher academic performance. Students who are at school every day do better academically in school & are more likely to graduate from high school. Also, learning is most meaningful when it is active & social, so helping students attend school daily is essential for the entire community.
